Six Types

Traditional Vampires

This is one we all know well. These vampires go through the whole going-up-in-flames-in sunlight thing, drink lots of blood, see no reflection in mirrors, and have a holy-objects phobia. These are the classic vampires who sleep in coffins and can transform into mist and such.

Daywalker Vampires

This vampire is usually like the one above except it can walk in the sunlight. We are seeing this kind of vampire more and more often, especially in teen entertainment, such as The Vampire Diaries, Twilight, and House of Night. This category also includes vampires like Blade, who can roll around in sunbeams unharmed.

Old Vampires

This is the ancient and usually wise vampire whom everyone respects and fears. Sometimes he is the ruthless leader who stays behind the scenes, or sometimes he's a Yoda-like figure for the young vamps. You've seen these older vampires in movies and books. Anne Rice's novels had many of them, such as wise Marius. In Underworld you had Viktor, the old, admired, and feared leader.

Noble Vampires

These are the aristocratic, polite, and respectful vampires. They are usually old vampires, as above. This vampire is a knowledgeable gentleman/lady who is often prim and proper. Picture a vampire scene where a sophisticated vampire walks up to a lovely woman, politely bows, and kisses her hand gently. We've seen this in Anne Rice's work, in Dracula, and in many others.

Feral Vampires

These nasty vampires are only interested in violence and blood. They have lost all traces of humanity and are nothing but bloodthirsty beasts. In most cases, these are vampires who have been starved of blood for long periods of time, as in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series.

Lonely Vampires

These are also known as the whiny emo vampires. These vampires aren't always the dark brooding type; they can also be old vampires who are simply angry and bitter at the world and their existence, the vampires who feel out of touch and out of place in this time and age.
