Visible Parents

By Lisa Beamer, Parenting Today’s Teen

Remember when you were the center of your child’s universe?  The world revolved around Mom and Dad.  Well, they’re teenagers now, and you may feel more like a distant orbiting planet.  As our kids grow up it’s normal for them to want to move away from us and become more independent.  When it comes to social situations, this often means that they’d like us to keep our distance from them as well.

We must respect our teen’s needs for privacy and time alone with their friends, but it is VITAL that we remain a visible part of their lives.  It is when we are unobtrusive yet present that we can discover what’s happening in their world, thus being in a better position to know if something is wrong or if our intervention is necessary.

So, how do we stay visible without turning our teens off?
