The first school building in the village of Malone was constructed here in 1806 of logs cut from virgin timber on the lot. A second stone building was build in 1831. The third building of brick was constructed in 1868 and was destroyed by fire in 1880.
When construction was in progress on the current cafeteria, an underground building was discovered that was found to be a part of the Underground Railroad. Slaves used the Underground Railroad as they were routed into Canada during the Civil War. The only way to leave and to get out of the Underground Railroad was through a brick manhole at the northwest corner of the arched roof. The room was about six by twelve feet with the slab walls approximately eight feet high.
The Malone Middle School is a grade 6-8 building serving approximately 600 students. This is the sole middle school building in the district, thus serving all district students in these grade levels.
The recipient of a three-year, half-million dollar Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration Grant, the middle school has become filled with exciting and innovative academic change for the purpose of improved student performance.
